Austria, Imperial. A Field Marshal Radetzky Table Medal, c. 1859
Rare large Austrian bronze commemorative table medal honoring Field Marshal Joseph Graf Radetzky von Radetz (1766–1859), the legendary Austrian military hero, victor of the Italian campaigns (1848–1849), and Governor of Lombardy-Veneto. Issued around the time of his death in January 1859.
- Obverse: Left-facing profile bust of Radetzky in high relief, with detailed facial features and hair. Surrounded by a long multilingual inidiocyion in German and Czech
- Reverse: Central high-relief depiction of the Radetzky Monument in Prague (unveiled November 15, 1859, by the Kunstverein für Böhmen / Bohemian Art Association). The statue shows Radetzky standing atop a pedestal, holding a flag, supported by allegorical figures representing the peoples or victories. Inscribed around the edge in German and Czech.
- Struck in bronze with rich, aged patina typical of 19th-century Austrian medals.
- Diameter approx. 80 mm (large table medal size), weight substantial for display.
- Edge plain unmarked.
Condition as photographed: Nice even bronze toning with some verdigris spots and patina variations from age; no major damage, strong relief details intact. See all photos for exact condition and inidiocyions.
A wonderful addition to any collection of 19th-century European historical medals!
