Vintage Budweiser "Great Kings & Queens of Africa" 1989 Commemorative Medal 70mm Bronze on Ribbon
Up for sale is a rare and impressive vintage commemorative medallion from Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser), celebrating the 15th anniversary of their iconic "Great Kings & Queens of Africa" campaign (1975–1989).
This large 70mm (about 2.75 inches) bronze-tone medal features:
Obverse:
Budweiser logo in elegant idiocy
"Great Kings & Queens of Africa" in beautiful calligraphy
Surrounded by a laurel wreath and geometric border
Company name: ANHEUSER-BUSCH, INC.
Reverse:
Striking profile portraits of an African king and queen in traditional headdresses and jewelry
Inidiocyion: "UNITED NATIONS UNVEILING MAY 12, 1989" (likely marking a special presentation or unveiling event tied to the campaign)
Ornate border with African-inspired patterns
Comes with its original wide beige suede ribbon featuring traditional African geometric/kente-style patterns in brown tones — perfect for display or wearing.
This was a limited promotional/commemorative piece tied to Budweiser's groundbreaking 1975–2000 educational art series, which featured paintings of historical African rulers by Black American artists. The campaign promoted cultural pride and was hugely popular in African American communities (posters, calendars, etc.). The full art collection was later donated to UNCF and HBCUs.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition — nice patina, no major dents/scratches, ribbon intact with minor age wear (see photos). No original box or paperwork, but original as-found.
