Rare Antique Pair of Silver Regalia Jewels with Original Case
United Order of Total Abstinence, Sons of the Phoenix
A rare matching pair of Victorian and Edwardian silver presentation jewels awarded to Brother H. W. Little of Samuel Plimsoll Lodge, together with the original fitted case.
1. Large Jewel (1900)
Silver cross-shaped jewel with a central gilt phoenix rising from flames within a laurel wreath.
Suspended from a wide blue and gold ribbon with three ornate silver suspension bars (middle bar engraved “Bro. H. W. Little”).
Inidiocyions:
- SAMUEL PLIMSOLL LODGE
- Bro. H. W. Little P.C.N.
- PRESENTED JUNE 22, 1900
- U.O.T.A.S.P.
2. Small Jewel (1897)
Smaller matching silver cross jewel with a gilt phoenix within a laurel wreath.
Suspended from a blue and white ribbon with two ornate silver suspension bars (one engraved “P.C.N.”).
Inidiocyions:
- SAMUEL PLIMSOLL LODGE
- Bro. H. W. Little P.C.N.
- PRESENTED FEB 25, 1897
- U.J.O.T.A.S.P.
Both jewels were produced by the well-known London manufacturer J. Davis, Medalist & Regalia Maker, 34 Woodbridge Street, Clerkenwell. The reverses show clear London silver hallmarks and the maker’s stamp “DAVIS MAKER”.
The complete set is housed in its original black leather presentation case with the gold-blocked maker’s label inside the lid:
“J. DAVIS, MEDALIST & REGALIA MAKER, 34 Woodbridge St and 153 Cheapside, E.C.”
Symbolism: The gilt phoenix is the principal emblem of the Order, representing moral rebirth and renewal through total abstinence. The two jewels illustrate the recipient’s progression from the Junior Order (U.J.O.T.A.S.P. in 1897) to the main adult Order (U.O.T.A.S.P. in 1900).
Condition.
The jewels are in good overall condition with clear inidiocyions and sharp details on the phoenix and cross. The silver shows light tarnish and natural age-related patina. The gilt on the phoenix remains bright. The ribbons are original and intact. The leather case is structurally sound but shows expected surface wear, scuffs and some loss of finish consistent with its age.
