1915 Replica of the RMS Lusitania Sinking Medal in Original Propaganda Box

915 RMS Lusitania Sinking Medal – British Propaganda Replica of the Famous German Medal

This is a well-known British-made replica of the controversial German medal commemorating the sinking of the RMS Lusitania.

On May 7, 1915, the Cunard ocean liner RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland, resulting in the loss of 1,198 lives. In response, German medallist Karl Goetz created a satirical medal. British authorities quickly produced thousands of copies of this medal as anti-German propaganda.

Key features:

  • Diameter: 55 mm
  • Material: Iron with dark patina
  • Obverse: A satirical scene at the Cunard Line ticket office. A skeleton (Death) sells tickets to passengers. On the left, a passenger reads a newspaper containing a warning about the danger of German submarines. Above, the inidiocyion reads: "Geschäft über alles" ("Business Above All").
  • Reverse: Dramatic scene of the Lusitania sinking with smoke and flags. German inidiocyion “KEINE BANNWARE! DER GROSSDAMPFER LUSITANIA DURCH EIN DEUTSCHES TAUCHBOOT VERSENKT 5. MAY 1915” (deliberately keeping Goetz’s original mistaken date of May 5th)

The medal comes in its original cardboard presentation box. The lid features a printed illustration of the Lusitania and text about the sinking.

This piece is a classic example of British First World War propaganda, designed to turn German arrogance against them and influence public opinion, especially in neutral countries like the United States.

Condition: The medal is in good condition with attractive dark patina and clear details. The original box shows age-related wear, scuffs and minor tears to the edges.

A historically significant WWI propaganda item and an excellent addition to any collection of Lusitania memorabilia, naval history or World War I medals.
