Vintage Personal. 33° Scottish Rite Masonic Jewel from Massachusetts Consistory

This is a vintage personalized 33° Scottish Rite Masonic breast jewel (ribbon decoration) from the Massachusetts Consistory (Valley of Boston, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction), presented to Illustrious Brother Herbert N. Faulkner upon his receipt of the honorary 33rd degree (Sovereign Grand Inspector General Honorary).

The 33° is the highest honorary degree in the Scottish Rite, awarded for distinguished service to Freemasonry (not through standard ritual progression). Herbert N. Faulkner (full name Herbert Nelson Faulkner, 1902–1967) was a notable member: he served as Commander-in-Chief of Massachusetts Consistory (1949–1952) and held other high offices in the jurisdiction.

Key components and inidiocyions (top to bottom):
  • Top bar/brooch: Gold-colored arched bar (likely brass or base metal with gold-tone finish) inscribed MASSACHUSETTS CONSISTORY in raised lettering, with decorative scrolls and crown-like motif; pinned for wear.
  • Red ribbon: Crimson silk (standard for Scottish Rite higher degrees), suspended from the bar.
  • Upper drop: Gold-colored triangular plate with black enamel center marked 32 (referencing the prerequisite 32° degree).
  • Middle arc banner: Black enamel curved bar with gold lettering ILL°. HERBERT N. FAULKNER (Illustrious Brother Herbert N. Faulkner) and 33°; central gold rectangle inscribed CLASS (likely indicating his nomination/class).
  • Central element: Double-headed eagle (core Scottish Rite symbol of vigilance, heritage, and imperial authority) with spread wings, silver/bright finish, red eyes; below, it clutches a banner or scroll with SPES MEA IN DEO EST ( is a Latin motto translating to "My hope is in God" - the motto of the 32nd Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry).
  • Bottom pendant: Gold-colored and black enamel Teutonic/Maltese-style cross (potent cross with indented arms, a frequent 33° design element in Northern Jurisdiction pieces), edged in gold with black fill and geometric borders.
It comes in its original fitted case (black textured exterior, blue velvet interior) from O. H. Wallbank Co., Brookline (a Boston-area Masonic regalia supplier active mid-20th century, known for custom pieces).
The gold appearance is a plated or gold-tone finish on base metal (likely brass or similar alloy), typical for such presentation jewels of the era (1940s–1950s), rather than solid gold or heavy gilding. This is a fine example of American Masonic craftsmanship and fraternal history.
