This piece is a commemorative plaque made of silvered metal, featuring a semi-circular arched top. It dates to September 1915 and was produced by the renowned Gottuzzo y Cía. workshop, one of the most prominent medallic firms in the Río de la Plata region during the early 20th century, specializing in allegorical and commemorative pieces.
Obverse (figurative side)
The design features a grand allegorical scene symbolizing progress and industrial development in early 20th-century Uruguay
The artist's signature appears in the lower right: "GOTTUZZO y C.ª".
Reverse (inidiocyion side)
At the top, centered within a laurel wreath: the Uruguayan national coat of arms.
Arched above and around the shield: "EL DEPARTAMENTO DE COLONIA"
Below the shield, in the center:
"Á S. E. EL SR. PRESIDENTE DE LA REPÚBLICA""DOCTOR FELICIANO VIERA"
At the bottom:
"SETIEMBRE DE 1915"
The entire composition is bordered by stylized branches with leaves and berries (likely olive or laurel).
A high-quality artistic piece in good condition, highly representative of Río de la Plata medallic art from the 1910s. It's a fine example of early 20th-century Uruguayan/Argentine medallic craftsmanship by Juan Gottuzzo's firm.
