This is a rare antique sterling silver medal awarded by the New York City Department of Parks for tennis achievements, sponsored by the Daily Mirror newspaper (a major New York tabloid that ceased publication in 1963). These medals were part of recreational and youth sports programs in NYC public parks during the mid-20th century (likely 1940s–1950s, based on similar documented examples).
Obverse (front): The rectangular pendant features a stylized figure of a tennis player in action (running and swinging a racket), set against a large maple leaf background symbolizing perhaps strength or the outdoors. Above the figure is text mimicking a newspaper headline layout:
Daily Mirror (with a small central emblem, possibly a figure or logo) N.Y. CITY DEP'T OF PARKS
Below the leaf: TENNIS
Reverse (back): Plain silver surface (with some wear, scratches, and a worn-off area at the top where a year/date was likely engraved, now mostly illegible). At the bottom is the hallmark: STERLING alongside a maker's mark.
CONDITION: The medal is in good overall antique condition for its age, with original patina, clear raised details on the obverse, and intact two-tone ribbon. The main defect is on the reverse: the engraved year/date at the top is heavily worn and almost completely erased.
The medal hangs from its original two-tone ribbon (gold/yellow and brown/black sections), attached via a loop and ring. It is a vintage collectible reflecting NYC's public parks sports initiatives, promoted by the Daily Mirror to encourage community athletics.
