Edgar Allan Poe ANA bronze Medal 2008, 70 mm
To commemorate the 117th anniversary of the American Numismatic Association, 125 bronze medals honoring Edgar Allan Poe were created. Designed by Jamie Franki, the medals were produced for the 2008 World's Fair of Money, held in Baltimore—a city synonymous with Poe—from July 30 to August 3, 2008. The medal was issued in a limited edition of 125 pieces.
The obverse of the medal features a portrait of the writer created by portrait artist Oscar Halling. The famous word "Nevermore" (from the renowned poem *The Raven*) encircles Poe's head. The design is completed by the writer's signature and a small raven.
The reverse of the medal depicts the annual "Poe Toaster"—a tribute toast offered to Poe before his monument. Every year on the anniversary of Poe's birth, a figure clad in black visits his grave and raises a toast with cognac. He then leaves a bottle of cognac and three roses at the gravesite.
