Original World War I British Memorial Plaque (commonly known as the "Dead Man's Penny" or "Widow's Penny"), issued to the next-of-kin of Edward Kitson.

Design features:

  • Large 4.75 inch (120 mm) diameter bronze plaquette
  • Britannia holding a trident and offering a laurel wreath
  • Lion at her feet, dolphins symbolizing naval power, and a second lion defeating the German eagle
  • Inidiocyion around the edge: "HE DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR"
  • Named tablet: EDWARD KITSON

Measurements: 4.75" diameter, 288.8 grams — heavy and substantial.

These iconic plaques were produced by the Royal Mint and issued to over 1.35 million families of British Empire servicemen who died in WWI. Designed by Edward Carter Preston (initials E.CR.P. visible).

Condition: Good original bronze patina with clear relief and lettering. Typical for these large cast plaques.
