Large historical bronze commemorative medal (approx. 58 mm) struck to celebrate the coronation of King Oscar I and Queen Josephine of Sweden and Norway in Stockholm on September 18, 1844. Issued by the Swedish Riksdag (per 1844 decision) and minted at Kungl. Myntet.
Obverse: Conjoined crowned busts of Oscar I and Josephine facing right, with royal mantles and order chains; legend: OSCAR I ET JOSEPHINA SVEC. NORVEG. GOTH. VAND. REX ET REGINA; signed below: QVARNSTRÖM DIR. P. LUNDGREN F. (directed by C.G. Qvarnström, engraved by Pehr Henrik Lundgren in 1848 after the model).
Reverse: Allegorical scene of Truth (seated, holding mirror) and Justice (standing, with scales) joining hands over an altar with crown and scepter; Swedish lion at base; legend: TALIBUS AUSPICIIS REGNA INCEPTA ("Under such auspices kingdoms are begun"); exergue: IN MEMOR.
