A beautiful NGC-certified Byzantine AE Follis of Justin II and Sophia, struck at Nicomedia in Regnal Year 6 (AD 570/1).
The coin shows Justin II and his wife Sophia seated together on a double throne, both nimbate, with Justin holding a globus cruciger and Sophia holding a cruciform scepter. The reverse features the large M denomination mark with the date across the field, a cross above, and NIKO identifying the Nicomedia mint.
This is a particularly nice example for the type, certified by NGC as Choice Very Fine (Ch VF) with a 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface. The coin weighs 15.00 grams and retains a pleasing ancient brown and green patina, with the major design elements remaining clearly visible on both sides.
Justin II ruled the Byzantine Empire from AD 565 to 578, and coins showing him together with Sophia are among the most recognizable bronze issues of the period. The combination of the large follis format, the paired imperial portraits, specific Nicomedia mint attribution, and NGC certification makes this a very appealing piece for a Byzantine or ancient coin collection.
